Steered trailer for sale - hydraulic & self-tracking

What is a steered trailer?

A steered trailer is a trailer in which one or more axles actively turn with the direction of travel. This significantly reduces the turning circle and minimises tyre wear. There are two main variants: self-tracking (passive) and hydraulically steered (active, including when reversing).

At Xiffix we regularly stock steered trailers from Broshuis, Faymonville and Nooteboom in various configurations.

Technical features

  • Self-tracking: passive, no external control required – axles lock when reversing
  • Hydraulic steering: active, usable when reversing, controllable via remote
  • Reduced turning circle and swept path
  • Lower tyre wear over time
  • Suitable for 1 to multiple steered axles
  • Automatic centring at higher speeds

When to choose a steered trailer?

A steered trailer is essential when manoeuvrability is the challenge: narrow roads, hard-to-reach construction sites, industrial premises, or oversized loads that need precise positioning. On long extendable semi low loaders (3 axles and up), hydraulic steering is often standard – and for good reason.

Industries: construction, industry, energy, infrastructure, ports.

When not to choose one?

For regular transport on wide roads without manoeuvring challenges, a steered trailer is an unnecessary additional investment. A self-tracking axle is often sufficient, or even a rigid trailer.

FAQ – Steered trailer

What is the difference between self-tracking and hydraulic steering?

Self-tracking axles steer passively based on road friction – simple and low-maintenance, but cannot be used when reversing. Hydraulic steering actively controls the axles based on the tractor unit's steering angle, including when reversing. Hydraulic is more manoeuvrable but more expensive.

Can I reverse with a hydraulically steered trailer?

Yes – that is precisely the key advantage over self-tracking. With hydraulic steering, the axles remain actively steered when reversing. This makes it ideal for manoeuvring in confined spaces.

How do I recognise a Tridec steering system?

Tridec is a widely used brand of mechanical rod-steering systems for trailers. You recognise it by the steering rods running along the chassis that transmit kingpin movement to the steered axles. It is a proven system with low maintenance costs.

Which brands of steered trailers does Xiffix stock?

We trade in trailers from A-brand manufacturers including Broshuis, Doll, Faymonville, Goldhofer and Nooteboom. Contact us for current availability: +31 342 490 402 or arjan@Xiffix.nl.
